Let’s be honest… choosing outfits for your engagement session can be way more stressful than it needs to be. I hear it all the time: “I don’t know what to wear,” “I want to look cute but not over the top,” “Help me, Andria.”
And I get it. These photos matter. They’re going to be everywhere: save the dates, your walls, your social media, so of course you want to feel amazing. I am sharing some things I tell my brides, plus some extra tips from our magazine, so you can walk into your engagement session feeling prepared and excited.
So here’s my simple, real-life guide to choosing outfits you’ll feel beautiful in… without spiraling or buying 47 things from Amazon.
Start with something you feel good in
I will never stop saying this: comfort shows on camera. If you’re in something that fits weird, pulls in the wrong places, or makes you self-conscious, you’ll be thinking about it the whole time. And it will show.
You don’t need to suffer through painful shoes or try a brand-new style that doesn’t feel like you. If you don’t normally wear heels, try wedges or boots. If you hate tight sleeves, skip them. You’re allowed to feel good, in fact we highly encourage it!

Choose outfits that flatter your shape
Fitted around the waist, flowy in the skirt, long dresses, pretty sleeves: these are almost always winners for photos. Anything that gives you a little shape will photograph beautifully. Soft fabrics like chiffon, silk, satin, lace… they bring movement and texture and look so romantic in pictures.
Long skirts that twirl are some of our favorite to work with and are always show stoppers. There are many things we can have you do in flowy skirts that will make your pictures fun and beautiful. Remember comfort, but don’t be shy showing off a beautiful you!
Bring two outfits
I recommend one dressier look (think, “date night but extra”) and one more formal look. And truly, you cannot be “too dressed up” for engagement photos. If you needed a reason to finally buy that dress you’ve been eyeing… this is it.
Keep things simple for him
Men look incredible in neutrals and layers. Think navy, gray, tan, slate blue….they are timeless neutrals that photograph so well. Men look great in a sports coat or suit jacket. A white shirt might seem like a good neutral by itself, but it can often wash out your skin in pictures. Remember layers, they are your friend.
Have him style his hair for a polished look and double check that pants are the right length. Closed toe dress shoes are the most flattering option.

Coordinating works better than matching
You do not need to match each other. Instead, choose colors that look good together without being the same. For example, if your main color is light gray with nude heels, he could wear a slate blue blazer and gray pants so your colors support each other. It feels expensive and intentional without being too matchy.
Think about your color palette
If you already have wedding colors, bring that palette into your outfits so everything feels cohesive as you move through your planning process. If you have not picked colors yet, neutrals are the safest and most photogenic option. Soft colors like cream, tan, light blue or muted pastels work beautifully. They compliment all skin tones and look good in any location we choose. Try to avoid neon or extremely bold colors because they reflect onto your skin and can be distracting.
Patterns, textures, and layers
Stay away from busy patterns because they take focus away from your faces. They can also photograph differently than they look. Textures like lace, silk, knit or leather add depth without overwhelming the look. Layers also help create variety, especially for men who can easily remove a jacket for a second look.
You have more control than you think
Your outfits shape the entire feel of your photos. People often think the location controls the vibe, but your clothes actually influence the look more. If you want light and airy photos, choose lighter colors. If you want romantic and soft, pick fabrics with movement. Your choices set the tone for your gallery.

You do not have to buy something new
If you already have an outfit you feel amazing in and it fits the style you want, wear it. New is not always better. Confidence is what photographs best.
